12 months Fixed Term Contract

MOLA is seeking to recruit a trainee Roman Pottery Specialist to join our specialist and post-excavation team based in London.

Working with more senior Roman pottery specialists, the successful candidate will undertake a 12-month training programme to enable them to confidently identify, record, analyse, interpret, and report upon ceramic building material from sites from the core areas of MOLA’s operations, particularly London, the East Midlands and Eastern England. The post will involve working on assemblages from infrastructure projects as well as other major excavations. The candidate will work with and be supported by a multidisciplinary team and will help our field and post-excavation teams by advising on appropriate techniques and procedures during excavation and subsequent stages of work.

You will assist more senior specialists with their projects and in their day-to-day work, and will receive appropriate training and support to allow responsibilities for your own projects. This will involve researching ceramic assemblages from developer-funded excavations and contributing to a range of other MOLA Research activities. This may include opportunities to establish or build upon your own research interests and to contribute towards the development of grant-funded research projects.

Following probation, and at successful completion of the training contract, it hoped that the trainee will be able to progress into a permanent position at MOLA, should the future work programme support this.

A demonstrable interest in Roman pottery, including experience of working with this category of finds, is essential, as are excellent organisational and writing skills. The successful candidate will be educated to at least degree level in archaeology, or a related subject, and may have a post-graduate qualification, ideally including extensive time dealing with building material and/or other artefactual evidence. A good general knowledge of British archaeology and experience working in a commercial environment are both desirable.
