MOLA is looking to recruit a Trainee Archaeobotany Specialist to join our Environmental team in London, working within the Research department.

The successful candidate will undertake a training programme to develop their research skills and to enable them to reliably and confidently identify, record, assess, interpret, and report upon assemblages of archaeological waterlogged, mineralised and charred seed and plant remains from the core areas of MOLA’s operations. You will join a team of post-excavation specialists, assisting senior specialists in their projects and day-to-day work, and will receive appropriate training and support to allow you to take responsibility for your own projects. This will involve researching archaeobotanical remains from developer-funded excavations and contributing to a range of other MOLA Research activities. This may include opportunities to establish or build upon your own research interests and to contribute towards the development of grant-funded research projects.

A demonstrable interest in archaeobotanical material is essential, as are excellent organisational and writing skills. You would be expected to have some previous experience working with environmental material in a voluntary, academic or professional setting. The successful candidate will be educated to at least degree level in archaeology or a related subject, or be able to provide evidence of equivalent professional experience. A post-graduate qualification in a relevant topic would be desirable. They will have previous experience using Microsoft Office software. A good general knowledge of British archaeology, previous experience in archaeological sample processing, and/or working in a commercial archaeology environment are also desirable.
